What does Sub 20 Minute 5K feel like?

Sub 20 minutes for 5K (4:00/km) is a genuine landmark — fewer than 10% of parkrunners ever break it. At this pace you'll be running near your VO2 max for the entire race. Pacing discipline in the first km is everything.

Even Split Checkpoints

These are the race clock times you should see at each marker for a perfect even split. Negative split runners should be 30–60s behind these in the first half.

Common mistakes

  • Going out at 3:45/km because you feel great — you won't feel great by km 3
  • Skipping the warm-up — sub-20 requires you to be ready immediately
  • Slowing in km 3 — this is the hardest km, everyone slows here, your job is to slow less

Key race day tips

  • km 1: 4:03 — not 3:50. This is not negotiable.
  • 1km to go: if you have anything left, use it all now
  • Proper warm-up (20 min easy + strides) is non-negotiable for this goal
